My Big Fat Bosnian Barbeque

My Big Fat Bosnian Barbeque

Naime, htjela sam ga upozoriti kako će to izgledati kada upozna moje.

When I was little, I often had nightmares. It always easier to fall asleep while the colorful images swirling on the TV. When I was little, I slept easier with romantic movies. Even later, when I was a little bit older, I continue to find consolation in beautiful and colorful pictures and romantic stories. Doesn’t everyone? The world is often cruel and relentless, sharp and dark, and we all need something simple, children’s pleasures. When you don’t do any thinking, and get really cozy…

I remember a long time, when I could not sleep, I was constantly watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding until I fell into sleep. Even today  it is one of my favorite movies. It is the first film which I and B. watched together.  I wanted to warn him it would be like when he meets my family.

So, while it isn’t still bitter cold, we still get the chance of using the sunny days and the healthy cold air to prepare a barbecue.

So I decided to devote my big fat Bosnian grill. B. is a nice guy from Kvarner, and a small family. We are about twenty people, and that refers to the closest family. No one had ever really counted. Our grandmother’s chief of whole tribe, but my mother was isn’t so harmless either. All the men in the family are extremely large. We are all together very, very, very loud. Oh yes, and if you have a problem, or even if you don’t, they all have their own very specific opinion and they don’t mind to say it very loudly. However, we’re never bored. I won’t tell you how it went for the first time they met, but I will tell you that, the Christmas after, the boys in the family tried to convince him to drink  “Kapljevina” liquid fat, because  my grandfather was expecting it from him as a new male member of the family.

To quote my sister, it would be to even more cool if we were speaking another language. Speaking of my angelic sister, she told my darling B.,  that when we are at Grandma’s, you must try a little of everything tha’s on the table, otherwise the grandmother gets really angry and dissapointed.

Mast se cijedi u posude zajedno s aromama. Zatim to djed uredno sprema i, kada radimo roštilj, roštilj obavezno podmaže kapljevinom.

Of course, no one in our family is drinking that. My B. is now preparing pranks with the boys for some young newcomers who would eventually turn up. He can’t wait for boyfriend of my sister.

This liquid is actually fat that assemble during roasting suckling pig on a spit. Fat drips into a pot along with the aromas, so that my grandfather neatly stores it and when we barbecue, he is using this for the grill.

Ja uglavnom čekam gladna kao vuk pokraj roštilja i jedem s nogu jer najčešće ništa nisam još stigla jesti taj dan.

Mama i baka viču “jedi, vidi kak’a si mršava”

I tako, to su Vam ti naši roštilji…nema baš puno filozofije, umaka, specijalnih sastojaka, samo velika obiteljska okupljanja, puno smijeha i veselja…a iza bosanskom roštilja, slijedi naravno, bosanska kava!

After that, like all normal people, we put an excessive amount of meat on the barbecue … sometimes you can find also some vegetables, so I’m happy too…. and a big salad bowl … and a lot of bread … While strong aromatic smoke is being mixed with the aroma of meat and spices, the older “boys” are pushing around the grill and discuss who does the better barbecue. Grandma gives the final judgment. The younger guys are laughing loudly. I usually wait starving by the grill because usually I hadn’t managed to eat that day.
My mom and grandmother shouting “eat, see what you thin”

So, guys, here is our bosnien barbeque, not much philosophy, more just simple family gathering, fun and eating 🙂 And after the bosnien grill, of course, bosnien coffee!

Of course, outside, in different cups, but don’t let it confuse you, everyone has it’s own! 😀 😉

The last thing is just to take care of this cheerful mess 🙂IMG_1453
